I have been hearing the word ‘friction’ a lot lately. It conjures up an image of waste, lost energy, slowness, and pain… and lack of flow.
Where is the friction in your processes?
Well, the first place I have friction is in my knees, but that’s probably not the kind you’re asking about.
Jamie Flinchbaugh • Author of People Solve Problems: The Power of Every Person, Every Day, Every Problem:
Friction is often first noticed as just a source of frustration. I was just talking with someone about a process that has to start over more often than not because some step wasn’t done yet. Frustration from all, takes longer than it should = friction. The core process isn’t something they feel they need to change, but need to remove these reasons for rework loops.
Great insights Jamie! Friction = Frustration.
Waiting, Transport, Motion, Red Tape… the list goes on covering all of the 9 wastes. Somehow the word friction motives us to action better that the word waste.
